On December 6, 1957 the Masonic Hall caught fire, damaging the main staircase as well as precious ceremonial items and decorations. Clayton Allendorph, the nightwatchman passed away on the second floor of the building due to suffocation from the smoke. The first started in the back of the Young Folks Shop near the entrance of the dining room and quickly spread up the stairs. The first caused an estimated $300,000 worth of repairs.
